St Judes benefit ride

On Sunday, October 28, Wethersfield Farm in Amenia, NY will be hosting a benefit ride for St Jude Children's Research Hospital. For those of you who have been to Wethersfield, you know how beautiful it is, especially in the Fall. For those of you who have never been there, this is a great opportunity to ride some of the most beautiful trails in Dutchess County & also benefit a worthy cause.

Minnewaska

We went to Minnewaska State Park this weekend.
What a wonderful ride.
Peak leaf season makes for a full parking lot. A full parking lot makes it difficult to maneuver a 24' trailer. I called after we got home & found that if needed, they will unlock the entrance near the horse parking lot for leaving.
Whew!
That's a good thing to know.

Also...
Great news!
"No Hunting" allowed near carriageways. They are open & safe all year to horses & people.

NYSHC Fall Pleasure Ride

Well, we just came back from the NYSHC Fall Pleasure Ride in Brookfield, NY. What a great weekend! The horse council works so hard to put this weekend together & they really do a fantastic job.

There were so many people there, we ended up parking in the track area. The barns were full & many horses were in portable corrals.

The food was delicious as usual. The auction was fun. Sitting around a campfire with friends makes for a really good time. There was a lot of laughing, especially when a skunk showed up.

*The guest speaker spoke about roll over prevention on farm machinery. He showed a few gruesome pictures.
Did you know... NY has a rebate program for installing roll over bars on older tractors that don't have any. That's great news.

The weather was so warm, we even walked around in T-shirts in the evening. It rained Saturday & Sunday night, but no problem. By morning, the sun was out challenging you to get in the woods before it got too hot.

We had enough fun to keep me laughing for awhile, especially when I think about that skunk.

Otter Creek

We're back from our 1st camping trip at Otter Creek. 2 days was not long enough!

Very neat & clean.
3 parking/camping areas with covered tie stalls. There are water faucets at the stalls.

Very clean bathrooms with flush toilets. No showers, so bring your own bathing method. There's even a covered pavillion.

Beautiful sandy trails. Picnic tables & hitching posts out in the middle of no-where, so pack your lunch. It makes for very relaxing riding.

A bear crossed in front of my husband about 20' away. Humans, horses & bear remained calm & cool. Nice experience.

I sure wish we had more time. It was hard to leave.

Great Blog!

Hi Cindy,
Great blog you have going here. Just wanted to let folks know that Minnewaska State Park Preserve in New Paltz (Ulster County, NY) is still bent on charging a $20 Annual fee per horse permit - no day use fee. I'm working on getting that changed.
See you on the trail,
Anne

Competitive Mounted Orienteering (CMO)

Has anyone heard of Competitive Mounted Orienteering (CMO) ? The link is in the "Riding Clubs" section in the side column.
It's a treasure hunt on horseback! This sounds like a lot of fun & something I'd love to do.

Other areas of the US have many rides scheduled for the year, but our area doesn't have much activity. NY, NJ, & PA are combined into one area. The closest ride to me is at Borderland Farms in Warwick, NY (near the NY/NJ border).
I'd love to get this type of thing going more here in NY.

If you don't know how to read a compass, they teach you & put you with an experienced rider. You can't go wrong.

"Success is not a matter of speed. A competitor moving too fast through a station area can easily miss a clue, and lose valuable time... "

"Riders can ride at any pace that suits their experience level and preference. Competitive riders will find plenty of stiff competition to test their riding and map skills, while families and riders wishing to have a more leisurely pace can enjoy a more relaxed competition. "

Check it out!!
