Great blog you have going here. Just wanted to let folks know that Minnewaska State Park Preserve in New Paltz (Ulster County, NY) is still bent on charging a $20 Annual fee per horse permit - no day use fee. I'm working on getting that changed.

Approximate Water Consumption By Horse Weight
While traveling over night or just going for a day ride, it's good to have an idea how much water our horse will need.~ ~ ~ ~
Under normal conditions, the horse will consume 1 gallon of water per 100 pounds of body weight. A 1,100-pound horse will consume 10 to 12 gallons of water daily. Here's a good article about how much water your horse needs:

We used to be 2 adults, 4 kids & 2 - 4 dogs, sleeping in a giant Sears tent. Now the kids are grown... Such wonderful memories. I miss it very much. We exchanged the tent for the gooseneck of a stock trailer. No big frills, just a glorified tent. Much drier when it rains!
Now it's my husband, myself, 2 dogs & the horses. It's hard to adjust food amounts from 6 people to just 2. I definitely overpacked the first few times.
When my youngest daughter was still with us, we'd care for the horses while Dad cooked breakfast. When we were done, breakfast was done too. * . * . * . Now, it's just Mom & Dad. By the time we were done with horses & breakfast, our friends were already out on the trail. Something had to change.
For fast easy meal preparation... I precook & freeze at home... Potatoes, onions, peppers & bacon. Add eggs & you have a delicious breakfast in no time.
Stew or chili frozen in ziplock freezer bags, reheated in the bag in hot water... (no messy clean up!)
or marinaded steaks & chicken cut in smaller pieces & frozen in ziplock bags make for no fuss, no mess meals... easy, yummy & fast.

I'm a BRAVO! Raw Diet retailer & have a variety of ground meat & whole bones for my dogs. I freeze meals in individual portions & take out to thaw as needed. Easy.

Well, many things have changed. Thank goodness some stay the same.... like the serenity & relaxation that riding a horse out in the woods brings. It's a wonderful place to be. Let's help keep these trails open by using them & letting others know about them, while making new friends along the way.
